The Office of Teaching and Research Technical Services (TRTS) comprises over 100 staff across five clusters. The Health Cluster’s three teams provide specialized support to the Schools of Health Sciences, Science, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, and WSU The College. TRTS is committed to continuous improvement, enhancing team processes and the student experience.TRTS staff work in partnership with Academic and Professional colleagues to adapt, innovate, and shape the future of learning for a transformative student experience.About the role
We are looking for two experienced and enthusiastic Senior Technical Officers to join our multi-disciplinary Medical Sciences team. Candidates should have expertise in at least one of the following: microbiology, molecular biology, or cell culture techniques. Your skills will be essential for the efficient operation and maintenance of our equipment and facilities, and you will play a key role in supporting our students and researchers to reach their full potential.Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide high-level technical support for laboratory activities including the preparation of materials for practical classes and research facilities.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot complex equipment specific to a medical science laboratory.
  • The purchasing of resources and minor equipment.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in labs and other practical teaching spaces, ensuring adherence to safety and compliance standards. Related duties include but are not limited to scheduled boiler blowdowns, laundering of lab gowns, safety showers check, waste management and maintaining stock levels of consumables.

Skills and Experience

  • Client-focused with strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.
  • Proficiency in microbiology & cell culture techniques, and/or experience with molecular biology techniques (such as Western blotting, PCR).
  • Skilled in the operation and maintenance of instruments such as autoclaves, microscopes, biosafety cabinets, thermal cyclers & electrophoresis apparatus.
  • Extensive experience in undergraduate technical support, including lab preparation.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of new procedures and protocols
  • Knowledge of lab safety, including SOPs, risk assessments, chemical safety, and biological waste disposal.
  • Extensive Experience in maintaining research and teaching laboratory workplaces including OGTR PC2 certified facilities.

These roles are primarily based at our Campbelltown campus, though travel to other campuses may be required.
